What is Handshake?

Handshake is a decentralized, permissionless naming protocol compatible with DNS where every peer has equal authority to register and resolve names. It is an open source project that allows anyone to register and manage their own top-level domain (TLD) as well as create subdomains. The goal of the project is to create an alternative root DNS system that is secure, private, censorship-resistant, and decentralized.

The Handshake network consists of nodes running the Handshake software which communicate with each other using a distributed hash table (DHT). This DHT stores data about registered domains and their associated records such as IP addresses. When someone wants to resolve a domain name, they send a query to the DHT which returns the requested information.

The main advantage of using Handshake over traditional DNS systems is that it eliminates the need for a centralized authority.
